Dealer Brian Hendelson purchased an eight-piece Proof set from a non-collector whose family had owned the coins for at least three generations.  The coins were certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as follows:

Half Cent (Breen 1576) - Proof-66 Brown
Large Cent (Breen 1863) - Proof-65 Brown
Half Dime (Breen 3002) - Proof-64
Dime - Proof-62
Quarter Dollar - Proof-63
Half Dollar - Proof-64
Quarter Eagle - Proof-66 Cameo
Half Eagle - Proof-65 Cameo

The set also included an 1836 Mint Medal (Julian MT-21) encapsulated, but not graded, by NGC.

Sometime before August 2000, the set was brokered by Pelco Coin Galleries of Columbus, Ohio to an anonymous Ohio collector for a reported $1,000,000.

The set re-appeared at auction on July 31, 2000 (Lot 580 in "The Rarities Sale" conducted by Bowers and Merena Galleries), selling for $345,000.00
